Practice tips

Above is a link to a wonderful article for moms and dads! I would encourage you to read it and continue to help motivate your child as they practice at home! As we all know, practicing is not always "fun" when there are other activities like playing outside with friends, etc. However, a good practice schedule is necessary for growth.

I try to be detailed in your child's practice record and hope that each time they sit down at the piano they are reviewing the comments from our lesson time and focusing on improving each assignment. Younger children will need your help during their practice and I also encourage parents to stay during the lesson!

Here are some of my own practice tips for students:
1. Play through new songs "hands separate" to identify any parts that may have tricky fingerings or rhythms!

2. Practice at a slower tempo at first. As your technique improves, try increasing the speed as long as you are able to keep the beat steady!

3. When your song has words with it (early lesson books), try singing along while you play!

4. Don't always start at the beginning of the song. Try playing only 3 or 4 measures in the song that might typically give you trouble. After working out the problems, start playing the song from the beginning and see if you were able to make an improvement!

5. Check your posture!!! Remember to relax your shoulders, keep your hands rounded and feet flat on the floor! :)
